What Is a Page Slug in WordPress?

A slug is a unique identifier for a WordPress page. Pages can have slugs that are used to uniquely identify them in the WordPress database.

When a visitor clicks on a page with a slug, WordPress looks up the page’s slug in the database and returns the appropriate page content.

When you create a new page in WordPress, you can use the page title as the slug. If you don’t want to use a slug, you can use the page name as the slug.

When you create a new post or page, WordPress assigns a slug automatically. The slug is made up of the post or page’s name, plus a unique number that WordPress creates.

For example, the slug for this blog post is “how-to-start-a-blog.”.

If you want to change the slug for a post or page, you can do so in the Posts or Pages sections of the WordPress admin area. Just enter the new slug in the slug field and hit the Update button.

WordPress also uses slugs to identify posts in the Recent Posts section of the blog. When you click on a post with a slug, WordPress displays the post’s content in a new window.
